Ropes & Knots

In the world of fire service, understanding how to confidently use fire safety ropes is crucial. This skill will allow you to safely and efficiently support the weight of both people and essential firefighting tools. We will cover the different types of rope used for fire service as well as how to properly care for and maintain them.

Fire Safety Rope

There are two types of fire safety rope used. A Life Safety Rope is used ONLY for supporting the weight of people during training exercises or actual emergencies. A Utility Rope is used for all other firefighting functions that do not include supporting people. These uses include the training and teaching of firefighting skills, hoisting tools, securing unstable objects, and cordoning off hazardous areas.

These ropes are made of synthetic materials such as nylon, polyester, polypropylene, and polyethylene. These materials create a stronger rope that is more resistant to rotting, mildew, melting, or burning. Ropes made with synthetic materials are also easier to wash and dry. However, synthetic ropes are susceptible to damage from abrasions or cuts, and are affected by ultraviolet light, acids, and alkalis.

When working with a fire safety rope, it’s essential to be able to identify all parts of the rope in context. The working end of your rope is used to form knots. The standing part of your rope sits between the working end and the running end. The running end of the rope is used for hoisting or pulling.

Care & Maintenance

Regular care and maintenance of your fire safety ropes will increase their longevity.

Everyday Care: Make sure to protect your fire safety ropes from sharp and abrasive surfaces. Keep them away from unnecessary exposure to heat, flames, or chemicals. Never step on a fire safety rope. Lastly, ensure that you follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for storage and care.

Cleaning: When it’s time to clean your fire safety rope, ensure that you use only mild soap and water. If you choose to wash in a washing machine, ensure the rope is securely placed in a mesh laundry bag and washed in a front-loader washing machine. Never use bleach. After washing, allow the rope to air dry indoors. Do not place the rope in a dryer or in direct sunlight. Allow to fully dry before storing.

Inspection: Make sure to conduct regular visual inspections after using or cleaning your fire safety rope. Run your fingers slowly over the rope to look and feel for any cuts, abrasions, or breaks in the fibers. Inspect the rope when it is both relaxed and taut. If you notice any signs of damage, retire the rope immediately.

As a fire service professional, it is essential to understand how each fire safety tool works and how to properly care for them so you can operate with confidence during an emergency.
